Banks will stop the exchange facilities.However, the notes would continue to be legal tender.

How is This Different from Demonetisation?
This is unlike demonetisation, wherein the legal tender of 500 & 1000 rupee notes was withdrawn. It is implemented under the RBI’s ‘Clean Note Policy'.
